Titanium In Icing...Yikes!

Titanium In Icing...Yikes!

Picture your ideal brunch setting: sizzling savory bacon, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and warm, just out of the oven cinnamon rolls topped with... titanium dioxide?! No, that’s not right. Oh, but it is! Did you know that many companies in America are currently using titanium dioxide as a coloring additive in their foods? This material is found in everything from candies, chewing gum, and frosting to paint, sunscreen, and plastics.

What exactly is titanium dioxide and is it safe? It is an insoluble and inactive material that is used in a variety of settings. It’s mostly used in foods to make them look pretty and appealing to eat. In frosting, it’s what provides the bright, white color. It is generally recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States. But, at the same time, there is not a lot of information available on the risks associated with the consumption of titanium dioxide and the effects of it on human health are not well known. Some countries and companies are beginning to realize that titanium dioxide may not be the safest ingredient to be used in food products. As of 2019, France has banned the use of titanium dioxide in any food product.

At Mason Dixie, your health is one of our top priorities which is why we only use real food and real ingredients you can pronounce. We believe that the ingredients found in your food shouldn’t also be found in the product you use to paint your walls. So, you best believe that the icing used in our yummy cinnamon rolls contains zero titanium dioxide. We chose delicious, good for you ingredients over perfectly, pretty ones. We hope you will too!
